Capuano School Spelling Bee

SOMERVILLE - map
Somerville News story with photos

Every year, the Capuano School PTA organizes a spelling bee to raise money for the school. It's a night of spelling, fun, drama, and raising money for a good cause. This year's bee, at the Holiday Inn on Washington St., was a big success and brought in over $3000 for the PTA. The Mayor, members of the board of Aldermen, the legislative delegation, and the Somerville News were on hand or sponsoring some of the 17 teams.

Our delegation-sponsored team was eliminated on the word "slumgullion", which is apparently a watery meat stew. Who knew?

Alderman-at-Large Dennis Sullivan's winning team generously donated the prize purse (a $500 donation from the ERA Group)
back to the PTA.

Patriots Day on the Cambridge Common and Foss park

The local papers got some great photographs and video of the Foss Park event.
From the Somerville Journal:
Somerville Journal Article

Paul Revere once rode by our own Foss Park in Somerville, and we got together on Patriots Day to celebrate his historic ride with an official reenactment, music from Somervillians, historical games, and some delicious local food. Foss Park looks better than ever, we had a great turnout, and I hope the crowd is even bigger next year.

The fun continued over at the historic Washington Monument on the Cambridge Common, with a Patriot's Day event organized by the Cambridge Veterans Organization (CVO) and the city's Department of Veterans Services. They had their own reenactment of Gen. William Dawes Jr.'s horseback ride from Boston to Cambridge alerting the colonists of the British threat of 1775.

These annual Patriot's Day events are a great opportunity for everyone in the area to learn about our cities' proud historic traditions--without boring the kids!
